The singer's musical Kinky Boots (which scored a whopping 13 nominations), took home seven awards tonight during the 2013 Tony Awards, including Best Original Score, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role and—the biggy—Best Musical.
"OK, I can't say I wasn't practicing in front of the shower curtain for a couple of days for this speech," an emotional Lauper admitted during her acceptance speech for Best Original Score. "I gotta thank my mom for sharing all that wonderful music. I wrecked all her Broadway musicals when I was a kid, the cast albums. That's how I learned how to sing."
It was also a good night for Diane Paulus and Pam MacKinnon, who both broke the mold for women in the industry by each winning directing Tonys. Paulus won her first Tony for directing the revival of the musical Pippin, while MacKinnon won for directing the play Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
