Ramaiya Vastavaiya Movie Review: Girish Kumar And Shruti Haasan Naughty Fight & Romance Hits The Audience!

"Kya ghisi-piti baatein kar rahe ho, kuch naya kaho na" (Why are you saying the same old things, say something new). It should have been the tagline of Ramaiya Vastavaiya, the most shopworn, tired film I have seen in a while.

It is a remake of a Prabhu Deva's own Telugu hit which was a remake of Maine Pyar Kiya, which itself was a refurbished version of the romances Hindi cinema was churning out in the '60s. Instead of Salman Khan and Bhagyashree, we have Girish Kumar and Shruti Haasan. Around a quarter of a century separates the two films. Did anyone stop to ask themselves why and for whom they are remaking this film? It is a Tips production and the lead actor is a Taurani (the producer's) scion, so it is understandable that you would want a cast-iron hit. So of course, you would reach for the oldest plot in the world: a poor but proud heroine, a rich but ultimately nice hero, an over-protective brother of the girl, and mealy-mouthed parents of the boy.

Newbie Girish Kumar plays a happy-go-lucky chap who is the only son of a business tycoon from Australia. He is boisterous, super rich and loves flirting. His parents Randhir Kapoor and Poonam Dhillon aren’t a problem, till their son falls in love. So clichéd! Shruti Haasan is a simple village girl who lives with her bade bhaiya Raghuvir, played by Sonu Sood. Sonu is a very hard working, self-made man who dotes on his only sister. Yes, we saw the same pyaar between brother and sister in Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, remember?

So the film is about Girish Kumar (Ram) and Shruti Haasan (Sona), two completely different individuals who eventually fall in love. Ram comes to India to attend his cousin’s wedding and that’s when he meets Sona, his cousin’s best friend. Initially the duo doesn’t get along, but by the interval they end up feeling ‘something-something’ for each other. But what is love without obstacles, separation and some melodrama, right?

Enter Poonam Dhillon (Ashwini), who can’t stand the fact that her son has fallen for a poor girl. She wants Ram to marry a rich lass and therefore insults Sona and her brother and throws them out of the house. All this drama takes place in the absence of Ram, obviously. The brother-sister return to their village and are back to living their normal life. So what happens next? Well, even if we didn’t reveal this, you could figure it out. Yes, Ram comes running after his lady love, leaving his aisho-aaram ki zindagi. He confesses to Raghuvir that he wants to marry his sister. Here’s when Sonu turns on his ‘angry brother’ switch and puts forward a condition which he thinks will drive the crazy-in-love young man away! But Ram takes up the challenge and wins it too. And there you have your ‘happily ever after’ ending.

The supporting actors Randhir Kapoor, Poonam Dhillon and Vinod Khanna play their parts well. Girish is impressive and is surprisingly bang on with his comic timing. Shruti does a decent job, but has a long way to go before she establishes herself as a bankable star. Sonu as the angry brother is convincing and gives a sober performance in the film. All in all the movie is strictly okay and a one time watch, but only if you can’t get enough of those typically romantic Hindi films.

The first half is spent in a large shaadi–wala ghar with village belle Sona (Shruti Haasan) and the Australia-returned Ram (Girish Kumar) making faces at each other, and then falling into each other's arms. Cue arrival of poor-but-proud bada bhaiya (Sonu Sood), and the nasty elders (Nasser, Satish Shah, Dhillon) can humiliate him and tell him to get out. Second half: city boy Ram shows up in the village, picks up cow dung, milks said cows, sleeps on straw pallets and eats terrible food, all to win over the bhaiya, and take his dulhan away.
