Miley Cyrus Criticised For Incorrect Use of English Grammar - Open Letter From Sufjan Stevens

Everyone from Cher to Sinead O'Connor to the chap who empties your trash has got an opinion about Miley Cyrus, that VMA performance, her tongue and the constantly questionable attire. And indie songwriter Sufjan Stevens is not about to be left behind. But the 38-year-old from Detroit doesn't have an issue with latex bodysuits or foam fingers; in fact he thinks Ms Cyrus has a 'great body.'

No, his problem is that Miley, 20, is a bit sloppy with her tenses.

The Heirloom singer instead hilariously picked apart the grammar on Miley's song #GetItRight from her current Bangerz album.

Stevens wrote on his Tumblr page: 'Dear Miley. I can’t stop listening to #GetItRight (great song, great message, great body), but maybe you need a quick grammar lesson.

'One particular line causes concern: 'I been laying in this bed all night long.' Miley, technically speaking, you’ve been LYING, not LAYING, an irregular verb form that should only be used when there’s an object.'

He added: 'Surely you’ve heard of Present Perfect Continuous Tense (I HAVE BEEN LYING in this bed all night long [hopefully getting some beauty sleep?]).

'It’s a weird, equivocal, almost purgatorial tense, not quite present, not quite past, not quite here, not quite there.'

He finished his missive with a slightly dark undertone however, by writing: 'Live brightly before your fire fades into total darkness.'

Meanwhile, Sinead O'Connor, 46, has written another letter to Miley.

She addresses the concept of the pair of them kissing and making up thusly: 'I hear you’ve asked “Are we supposed to kiss?”.. when someone asked you would we ‘make up’.

'No, worry not.. there’s no need for kissing.. But let me state again.. You’re supposed to apologise for the mocking of any person who sought help, publicly or privately, to prevent themselves from committing suicide.

'You’re also supposed to apologise for mocking people who are mistakenly or otherwise perceived to be mentally ill.

'Because what you did is extraordinarily dangerous as it contributes to the silences which allow suicide to flourish and also contributes to the bullying of people perceived mistakenly or otherwise to be mentally ill.

'That bullying causes suicides. Thats why you’re supposed to apologise. Its really very simple. People die every day because of the type of thing you did.
'Its not that hard to say sorry. Doing so will save lives.'

Miley Cyrus Criticised For Raunchy MTV Video Music Awards 2013 Performance

An organisation backed by Miley Cyrus's dad has criticised a raunchy MTV Video Music Awards performance by ... Miley Cyrus. The Parents Television Council have accused MTV of "falsely manipulating the content rating" for their program, encouraging children to watch "adults-only material" such as Cyrus's twerking routine with Robyn Thicke.

As the New York Times points out, conservative outrage is nothing new for MTV's skin-studded red-letter night. It's not even the first time that a former child star writhed in flesh-tone underthings. But Cyrus isn't just the previously family-friendly Hannah Montana: she is also the daughter of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, who sits on the Parents Television Council's advisory board.

Although the Parents Television Council's press release did not mention Billy Ray, it did single out Miley's tongue-waggling performance: "MTV continues to sexually exploit young women by promoting acts that incorporate 'twerking' in a nude-coloured bikini," it wrote. "How is this image of former child star Miley Cyrus appropriate for 14-year-olds?" However the council also underlined that sexually provocative pop stars aren't the object of its indignation - MTV's parental ratings are.

Billy Ray Cyrus's response was more ambivalent. "Thanking God for so many blessings tonight," he tweeted in the hours after the VMAs. "Continue to pray for world peace. More love ... less hate." But the 52-year-old later explained that he wasn't referring to Miley's performance: he was talking about Syrian war crimes. "FYI ... late last night I was watching devastating news out of Syria," he wrote. "Chemical weapons used on innocent children is unacceptable!"

Miley Cyrus's fourth album, Bangerz, is out 4 October.
