I’ll Do It My Way – The Incredible Journey of Aamir Khan Reads Like A Documentary

His film 3 Idiots is the highest grosser ever in India, with over Rs 200 crore in box office collections. Add another Rs 100 crore if you count the overseas figures, and it’s a record. It’s also the second highest grossing Hindi film abroad (the highest being Shahrukh Khan’s My Name is Khan). But Aamir Khan did not achieve this overnight. His debut Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak was a blockbuster, followed by a series of flops. The actor realised that “the intense fan following on the release of QSQT was for someone new rather than someone good”.

A career spanning many ups and downs, failures and successes has led to the Aamir of today. Megastar, marketing maverick, sensitive director, shrewd producer, social activist, loving family man and great friend. All this was achieved with a great deal of attitude and is showcased in a book aptly titled I’ll Do It My Way – The Incredible Journey of Aamir Khan by Christina Daniels. The book is a collection of excerpts from and analysis of quotes, anecdotes and experiences of Aamir and his colleagues, sourced from old magazines, newspapers, websites and television interviews. It’s been broken down into chapters like A Star is Born, ‘Break away’ Cinema, Icon, Iconoclast, Cinema for Change and The Superstar.

So what’s new? Not much for admirers who’ve been following the ace actor-director’s career from its start. But for younger fans, the book will be an interesting read, not just for rare pictures and an insight into how AK chose his scripts, but also for his complex childhood (bully in school, timid at home) and his transformation from a shy guy and actor to the evolved and confident human being that he is today.

Daniels shares bites like how Aamir had his initial hands-on training as spot boy, assistant and production manager on his friend Aditya Bhattacharya’s film Paranoia. He soon knew his calling and joined his uncle Nasir Hussain on Manzil Manzil as assistant and simultaneously acted in Ketan Mehta’s Holi. He later starred in Aditya’s National Award-winning film Raakh.

What was fascinating to read was that in a rare combined interview of Aamir and Shahrukh to Filmfare magazine in 1993, Shahrukh advised Aamir to continue on his pathbreaking trail. He said, “He’s (Aamir) one of the finest actors we have, someone I expect to evolve like Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor did… I know he has no limitations… Aamir, I feel you should start playing someone else besides Aamir Khan. You’re good for another six-seven years and you’ll be remembered for ten more for your performances.”

It’s been more years than SRK stated Aamir would last, and both superstars have in fact maintained their positions and achieved much more.

Speaking to Filmfare, again in 1993, Aamir predicted the likeability of Andaz Apna Apna even as he was shooting for the film. He said, “Both Salman and I have performed very well. We have distinctly different and well-balanced roles and it will be difficult to decide who is better.” Showing no insecurity and a thorough understanding of the market he stated, “My fans will argue that I have overshadowed him while Salman loyalists will campaign for him, but in the end, I’m sure there will be no strong vote in favour of either one of us. The audience will like both of us and that should contribute to the success of the film.” Andaz… was not a big success when it released, but is considered a cult comedy now.

Quotes by Aamir’s various directors, producers and co-stars when interviewed by Daniels are fresh. Aditya Bhattacharya, Mansoor Khan, Indra Kumar, Mahesh Bhatt, Dharmesh Darshan, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, AR Murugadoss, Asin Thottumkal, Rajkumar Hirani et al speak about the man’s genius and how his vision or his persona helped shape their films. The only person conspicuous by her absence is Aamir’s QSQT co-star Juhi Chawla. Both stars acted in several movies together, but were always known to share a love-hate relationship. All that can be forgotten now, with Juhi’s recent appearance at the 25th anniversary celebration of the iconic celluloid love story and her expressed desire to star in the sequel.

All in all, I’ll Do It My Way is exhaustive, but unlike what Aamir says cinema should be – entertaining. The book reads more like a documentary than a commercially successful Aamir Khan film. And so it might get a tad boring for readers. What could’ve made it better? One can’t say, as the author maintains that it’s not a biography. Neither is it only in praise of the actor. Fair enough. You will like it if you don’t expect too much from it.

Sonal is a bundle of talent. In her last release she showcased her singing talent. "It was by chance that I sang for a song in 3G. Mithoon, the music director of the film, was not getting a female playback singer whose voice could gel perfectly with my character in the movie. I used to sing during the shooting breaks and Mithoon noticed it. One fine day, he came to me and told that he wants to record Kaise Bataaon track in my voice."

"I was really apprehensive, but later I decided to go along with the offer. The day I went to the studio for the recording, I was really nervous but Mithoon supported me a lot and the song turned out really well. Now I have decided to take professional training in singing, and Mithoon's dad has also provided me with a teacher to hone my singing skills," shares the actress.

For Sonal, her decision to make a career in Bollywood was not the easiest thing to do. "I belong to a conservative family. My father was a police inspector and he was quite strict. When I thought of making a career in the glamour industry, it was quite difficult to convince him initially," says the actress. 

She adds, "When I won the title of Miss World Tourism things started shaping up in my favour in my family. My father and family started supporting me as they felt that I would do well in this industry."

"After Jannat, I went back to Delhi to pursue my studies, but now I am back and in days to come, audiences will get to see more of me on screen," Sonal promises.

Mamta was born on 14 November 1985 in Bahrain into a well off Malayali family which originally hails from Kannur. She attended the Indian School, Bahrain until 2002. She pursued a Bachelor's degree at Mount Carmel College Bangalore. She modeled for print ads for companies such as IBM and Kalyan Kendra and modeled on the ramp for the Mysore Maharajah and Raymonds. Acting

Mamta débuted in the 2005 Malayalam film Mayookham, directed by Hariharan. Although the film did not do well at the box office, Mamta attracted attention for her sensitive portrayal of Indira.

Subsequently, she acted alongside Mammootty in Bus Conductor, with Suresh Gopi in the films Adbutham (2006) and Lanka (2006), and alongside Jayaram in Madhuchandralekha (2006). She also played the female lead in Baba Kalyani with Mohanlal. Later that year, she débuted in the Tamil film industry, starring in the Karu Pazhaniappan-directed film Sivappathigaram opposite Vishal Krishna, which turned out to be an average grosser.

In 2007 she acted with Mammootty in the blockbuster film Big B. She eventually stepped into the Telugu film industry as well, when she appeared in a supporting role in the film Yamadonga, directed by SS Rajamouli. The film became one of the biggest hits of the year. She had lent her voice for a couple of songs in this film too. In 2008, she appeared in 7 films, predominantly in Telugu-language films. 

 Her first release was her début Kannada film Gooli. She then starred in the film Krishnarjuna, essaying the lead female role, which did not do well at the box office. Victory was her next assignment as lead actress, but that film also failed at the box office, following which she appeared in a cameo role in her only Tamil release that year, Kuselan, alongside Tamil superstar Rajinikanth. Three more Telugu releases featured Mamta, including Homam, directed by JD Chakravarthy and Srinu Vaitla's King opposite Nagarjuna. In both these films she also performed as a playback singer in several songs.

In 2009, she starred in the comedy film Guru En Aalu alongside Madhavan, and the thriller Passenger, sharing screen space with Dileep and Sreenivasan, respectively. While the former had an average run at the box office, the latter was declared a surprise sleeper hit in Malayalam. The film 'Passenger' in which she played the role of a television reporter 'Anuradha', became a turning point in mamta's career. 

In 2010, she worked with Jayaram in the critically acclaimed Kadha Thudarunnu directed by Sathyan Anthikkad, for which she won her first Best Actress Award from Filmfare. This film also won her the 'Vanitha award for best actress - Malayalam', the 'Mathrubhumi award for best actress - Malayalam' and the 'Asianet award for the best actress- Malayalam '. Other projects in 2010 included Musafir with Rahman, Anwar with Prithiviraj, and Kedi with Nagarjuna. Mamta's first film in 2011 was the Malayalam film Race, in which she played the role of Niya, wife of a cardio surgeon Abey (Kunchacko Boban). The film failed to do well at the box office. Her next release in malayalam was Naayika. Mamta has completed work on her third Tamil film, Thadaiyara Thaakka directed by Magizh Thirumeni.

Singing

Mamta is as an acclaimed playback singer in Indian films as well. Mamta, who is trained in Carnatic and Hindustani music, first sang playback in the Telugu film Rakhi, singing the title song under Devi Sri Prasad's direction, making her début in the Telugu film industry as a singer before making her acting début in Telugu. She went on to win the 2006 Filmfare Best Female Playback Singer Award for that song.

Subsequently, she was asked to sing several songs for composer Devi Sri Prasad, including the chartbuster "Akalesthe Annam Pedtha" for the Chiranjeevi-starrer Shankardada Zindabad (later dubbed as Daddy Mummy in the Tamil film Villu), "36-24-36" for the film Jagadam, "Mia" for Tulasi, and "Ghanana (Funny)" and the title song for the film King. Other music directors she has worked with include M. M. Keeravani (for her own films Yamadonga and Krishnarjuna, also Chandamama), R. P. Patnaik (for Andamaina Mansulo), Chakri (for Victory), Nithin Raikwar (for her own film Homam) and Thaman (for Jayeebhava).

In Tamil, she sang "Kaalai Kaalai" in the film Kaalai, which starred Silambarasan in the lead role. She sang "Idai Vazhi" for the comedy film Goa under noted composer Yuvan Shankar Raja's direction. Both songs featured her singing alongside Benny Dayal. She was heard for the first time in her mother tongue, Malayalam, in the 2010 film Anwar.
