As if that wasn't enough flesh-flashing, the panels running down her torso - from armpit to hip - consisted of a nude-tone bodice to make her appear naked beneath the gold tunic material.
And it seems the dress seemed to detract from Ellie's performance, with the British star's rendition of No1 hit Burn almost irrelevant as fans took to Twitter to discuss the wardrobe choice instead.
Part of the problem arose from the fact that Beyonce originally rocked the frock in a promo shot for her Mrs Carter World Tour, inevitably drawing comparisons between the two ladies.
One fan slammed: "Love Ellie Goulding but what is with that dress??? #PutSomeKnickersOn #NoQueenB".
While another tweeted: "Watching #xfactor and wtf is Ellie Goulding's dress #shocker".
But one fan that DID appreciate the barely-there creation, was the designer himself.
Julien Macdonald tweeted: "WOW! @elliegoulding is a goddess in gold wearing my dress tonight @XFACTORSTYLE #XFactor Amazing!!!"
Meanwhile, Ellie seems to have struck up a friendship with wannabe boyband Kingsland Road.
After revealing they were one of her favourite acts on the show, they later tweeted: "@elliegoulding thanks for the sound advice today, lovely meeting ya, the Kingsland lads x"
While she added: "@KingslandRd you guys are really lovely, good luck x"
The quintet have successfully made it through to week two, alongside Tamera Foster, Sam Bailey, and Miss Dynamiz.
Sadly for Lorna Simpson, her fate was sealed as the first evictee after losing out to Shelley Smith in the sing-off..
