Harley Lane Becomes The First Male To Denied A Kiss From Nicole Scherzinger at Pride Of Britain Awards

Young hero Harley Lane has possibly become the first male in the universe to refuse a kiss from Nicole Scherzinger.

Little Harley, who scooped the Child of Courage award at this year's Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards, was certainly playing hard to get as X Factor beauty Nicole presented his award.

Nicole said: "Hey little buddy how are you? Can I give you this award" to which Harley says "ohhhhh yes!"

Nicole also says she wants to give Harley a kiss but he refuses, Nicole adds that she was going to ask him to marry her and he jokes "oh no you don't, mummy get me off stage!"

Carol says Harley must be the only man in Britain to refuse a kiss from Nicole. Well, he did have an excuse - he said his mum would tell Nicole off.

Well, Harley is busy - now eight, he is determined to raise as much money as he can for the hospital that saved his life.

The Stockport lad was just three when, in May 2009, he woke up one night with a sore throat and high temperature.

His parents, Samantha, 28, and Adam, 25, took him to hospital where doctors sent him home with a suspected ear infection.

But the next day Harley had a rash all over his neck and within hours was fighting for his life against bacterial meningitis.
His heart stopped three times and he was clinically dead for four minutes before doctors revived him and put him in an induced coma.

Sadly, after septicaemia set in, doctors were forced to amputate both arms and legs in a bid to save him.

“When his heart arrested,” says Samantha, “I was so hysterical nurses had to pull me away. I couldn’t believe it was happening to my little boy. I thought he was going to die. I remember being at his bedside and he whispered if he could have some fish fingers. It was the last thing he said before doctors put him in a coma.

“Doctors warned me the next step would be amputation, but I thought it might be a few fingers, or a hand. When I was told it would be all his limbs, I just couldn’t take it in. The first time I saw Harley after surgery I collapsed.”

Harley, who has received a Child Of Courage award, then spent seven months in hospital recovering, including his fourth birthday, but throughout his ordeal he never stopped smiling.

“I couldn’t believe how quickly he adapted to his new life,” says Samantha. “If anyone struggled to cope it was me, not him.”

With his prosthetic limbs, the cheeky youngster has thrown himself into everything, including completing the 1.5km Bupa Mini Great Manchester Run, raising more than £1,000 for charity.

Harley, who one day wants to be the first man with no legs to walk on the Moon, says, “I did training by kicking up cushions very fast. I was very nervous, but I enjoyed it.

“It’s important to raise money for Manchester Children’s Hospital because they help people.”
