On Priyanka Chopra's 31st birthday today, Zanjeer (2013) director Apoorva Lakhia talks about his film's heroine.
Priyanka reprises the role of Mala that was earlier played by Jaya Bachchan in the classic. Talking about Priyanka, Apoorva says, "I wanted someone bubbly to play this role and someone opposite of Ram Charan Teja's character who plays the angry young man. We wanted a modern strong woman and she was our first choice. I've always wanted to work with Priyanka and I've managed that. She's the biggest actress I have worked with".
While there have been reports of Priyanka being paid a whopping amount for this film, Apoorva clarifies. "It is a whopping amount compared to other heroines but then the film is in two languages (also in Telugu). So she should be paid twice. Even the technicians were paid twice".
Adding, "Priyanka has a very interesting introductory song in the film. It's not an item number. An item number is for a woman who is not playing the main lead and is making a guest appearance. Priyanka's doing a good song which she has not done in long."
